Chaplain John Lorenz of Fort Bliss, Texas will the guest speaker on Sunday, May 22nd for our Armed Forces Sunday service and meal. In addition to prayers and thanksgiving for all of Zion’s active duty servicemen and their families, special honors will be given veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Meal After Church and Special Presentation
After church, during the meal, Chaplain Lorenz will say a few words about the responsibilities of chaplains in the military. Chaplain (Cpt.) Jonathan J./Lorenz is with the 123rd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Armored Division at Fort Bliss.
He was born in Milwaukee, WI in 1976, but spent his formative years living in Indianapolis, IN. He attended Michigan Lutheran Seminary, a ministerial preparatory boarding school in Saginaw, MI. Chaplain Lorenz graduated with a high school diploma in 1994. He subsequently attended Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1999. From 1999 to 2005 Chaplain Lorenz worked in the construction field as a general carpenter.
In 2005 he enrolled at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, IN. During his third year at the seminary, Chaplain Lorenz served a year-long internship at Trinity Lutheran Church in Knoxville, IA. He received his Master of Divinity degree in 2009. During his seminary studies, Chaplain Lorenz entered into the Chaplain Candidate program through the Indiana National Guard. He completed Chaplain Officer Basic Leadership Course at Fort Jackson, SC in 2009.
From 2009 to 2013 Chaplain Lorenz served as sole pastor at Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sandusky, MI.
In 2011 he was accessioned as a Chaplain in the Indiana National Guard and assigned to the 1/293rd Infantry Battalion in Fort Wayne, IN. During that time, he completed the Combat Medical Ministry Course at Fort Sam Houston, TX in 2012. From July 2013 to September 2013 he served as Chapel OIC at Camp Atterbury Joint Military Training Complex in Edinburg, IN. In November 2013, Chaplain Lorenz entered into Active Duty and currently serves as Battalion Chaplain for the 123rd BSB at Fort Bliss, TX.
Chaplain Lorenz married wife Megan Summers in 2002 in Fort Wayne, IN. Together they have five children, Isaac (11), Gabriel (9), Chloe (7), Samuel (5), and Hannah (4). Megan works primarily as a Stay at Home Mother. She also works part time as a Billing Specialist for Summers and Haley Wealth Management.
Chaplain Lorenz’s goals include serving as an Army Chaplain until retirement, CPE and receiving a Doctor of Ministry degree.
Chaplain Lorenz’s awards and decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal (1), Army Commendation Medal (1), Army Achievement Medal (1), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (1), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, And the Army Service Ribbon. He also received the Iowa Commendation Medal and the Indiana Commendation Medal while serving in the National Guard.
